About James Irvine Trail to Fern Canyon
The summer Fern Canyon reservation is a parking permit, not a trail permit. Walk in from the Prairie Creek Visitor Center on the James Irvine Trail and you don't need one — NPS says so outright, and the loop page lists permits and reservations as "No." Parking at the visitor center is free. Reservations for the Fern Canyon lot often sell out within minutes of opening at 9am the day before, so this is the reliable way in from May 15 to September 15.
Distance is where the agencies scatter. The 2026 Visitor Guide hikes table gives 10.4 miles out and back, 5 to 7 hours, 1,400 feet of gain. NPS's loop version, returning on Miners Ridge, is listed at 12 miles and 4 to 8 hours. Another NPS page calls it a 10-mile round trip. For the one-way segment alone, NPS says 4.2 miles and California State Parks says 5.2.
Difficulty splits too. NPS calls it moderate, "non-level grades, not steep." State Parks calls it strenuous. Assume a full day either way.
Current conditions matter here. As of August 2026 the trail is partially open: construction on the staircases connecting James Irvine to Fern Canyon has closed the easternmost set, with the western stairs still in use. Fern Canyon is open, with ankle- to knee-deep water expected. Wooden footbridges go in from June to September only.
Roosevelt elk graze at Elk Prairie and Gold Bluffs Beach. Keep a school-bus length back, and more during calving in late spring and the rut from August into October. Winter brings hard rain, wind and flooding at Hope Creek. Pick footwear you can wade in.

Local planning questions
Frequently asked
Do you need a reservation to hike the James Irvine Trail to Fern Canyon?
No. NPS states that reaching Fern Canyon on the James Irvine Trail from the Prairie Creek Visitor Center does not require a permit. The May 15 to September 15 reservation covers entry to the Gold Bluffs Beach day-use area, including the Fern Canyon parking lot, so it applies to vehicles rather than hikers. Parking at the visitor center is free.
How long is the James Irvine Trail to Fern Canyon?
The 2026 Visitor Guide lists 10.4 miles out and back with 1,400 feet of gain, 5 to 7 hours. Other official figures differ: NPS elsewhere calls it a 10-mile round trip, and the loop returning on Miners Ridge is given as 12 miles, 4 to 8 hours. Plan for a full day.
Is the James Irvine Trail open?
Partially, as of August 2026. Construction on the staircases connecting the trail to Fern Canyon has closed the easternmost staircase; the western stairs remain accessible. Fern Canyon itself is open, with ankle- to knee-deep water. Check the park's Current Conditions page before you go.
Do you get wet hiking into Fern Canyon?
Almost certainly. Wooden footbridges are installed only from June to September, and even with them in place the canyon is an active stream bed with log jams to climb. NPS advises waterproof footwear with good traction.
Are dogs allowed on the James Irvine Trail?
No. Pets are prohibited on all trails in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park and throughout Redwood National and State Parks, and the NPS trail page lists pets as not permitted. Service animals are welcome.
