Humboldt itineraries for one, three, or five days

Start with a pace that feels right for your group. These suggested outlines connect towns and landscapes; use the destination guides to pick specific stops, check access, and allow time for meals and breaks.

One day: Arcata and the Trinidad coast

Keep a short visit focused on one part of the county. Start around Arcata Plaza, choose a forest walk that suits your group, then head toward Trinidad for a coastal viewpoint. Leave time for lunch and a relaxed return instead of trying to fit in both the northern parks and the Avenue of the Giants.

Three days: Humboldt Bay, coast, and redwoods

Spend day one around Eureka's Old Town and Humboldt Bay. Give day two to Arcata and Trinidad, with a beach or viewpoint stop chosen for the conditions. Reserve day three for the Orick area and Redwood National and State Parks, choosing your trail after checking current park information. Keeping each day in one area leaves more time outside the car.

Five days: add the Avenue of the Giants

Use the three-day plan as a starting point, then make room for Southern Humboldt. Spend a day along the Avenue of the Giants with a small number of forest stops, and another around Ferndale or revisiting your favorite area. Consider changing your overnight base for the southern portion instead of repeating the same drive. These are flexible trip ideas, not timed or reserved routes.

Build your own day-by-day Humboldt itinerary

Choose where to stay and what to explore

Eureka and Arcata are useful starting points for Humboldt Bay, town walks, food, and shops. Explore Old Town Eureka or Arcata Plaza, then choose nearby outings around your interests.

For a trip focused farther north, compare Trinidad and Orick. For a southern forest trip, browse the Avenue of the Giants and Garberville guides.

Pick your main outings before booking your base. Compare Humboldt places to stay, then look for redwood trails, parks, and beaches in the same area.

Leave space between outings for local food and drink, independent shops, and events during your visit. Our local stories offer more ideas for getting to know the county.

Before you head out

Driving distances and transportation

Check route mileage and travel time between your actual stops before choosing how much to do in a day. A northern parks day and an Avenue of the Giants day work better as separate outings. Allow extra time for scenic roads and stops, check Caltrans road conditions, and save directions before leaving reliable reception. If traveling without a car, confirm that transit reaches your destination and that a return service fits your day through Humboldt Transit Authority.

When to visit, weather, and what to pack

Summer is generally drier in the coastal redwoods, but fog and cool conditions still call for layers. The wetter months call for more flexibility around trails and roads. Pack a rain layer, comfortable walking shoes, and water, and check the forecast for each part of your route. The National Park Service weather guide explains the coastal redwoods climate.

Park access and reservations

Check your chosen park's official information before committing to a trail, campsite, or day-use area. Access, fees, and reservation requirements can vary. Start with Redwood National and State Parks visitor information and follow its current alerts and destination guidance.

Beaches, tides, trails, and wildlife

Keep watch on the ocean: sneaker waves can reach far beyond the usual surf line. Check beach alerts and tides before choosing a coastal walk, and avoid routes where the tide could cut off your return. Give elk and other wildlife plenty of space and respect trail closures. Read the park safety guidance before heading out.

Humboldt trip-planning questions

How many days should I spend in Humboldt County?

For a first visit, we suggest three days: one around Humboldt Bay, one on the Trinidad coast, and one in the redwoods. With one day, choose a single area. With five days, add Southern Humboldt and leave room for a slower day or a change in weather.

Where should I stay for a Humboldt trip?

Choose your base around the places you want to visit. Eureka and Arcata suit a trip centered on Humboldt Bay and town activities. Consider Trinidad or Orick for a northern coast and redwoods trip, or the Avenue of the Giants area for time in Southern Humboldt. Compare the actual route from your lodging to each day's stops before booking.

Can I plan a trip without using the map?

Yes. Start with the sample itineraries and town guides on this page, then browse our places to stay, food, and things-to-do directories. The interactive builder is an optional way to organize stops into days and save your itinerary.

What should I check before a redwoods visit?

Check the official page for each park or trail for current access, closures, permits, and reservations. Requirements differ by destination; do not assume that access to one redwood park covers every trail or day-use area. Keep an alternative stop in mind if your first choice is unavailable.
