About Berry Glen Trail
Berry Glen was a Depression-era family store on the old Redwood Highway, known to travelers for its homemade berry pies. The store is gone. Its name carried over to the trail that climbs from Elk Meadow up to Lady Bird Johnson Grove, and that climb is 1,200 feet.
How long the trail runs depends on which NPS page you read. The current "Trails South of the Klamath River" listing says 3.5 miles one way; the 2010 news release announcing the opening called it a 3-mile trail. Berry Glen doesn't appear in the 2026 Visitor Guide hikes table or the park unigrid, so no published time estimate goes with either figure. NPS rates it moderate to strenuous.
Parking is the real payoff. Lady Bird Johnson Grove has a small lot at the top of Bald Hills Road that's typically full from 11am to 4pm in summer, no room for oversized vehicles or trailers, and shoulder parking along the road has been a ticket-and-tow offense since November 8, 2011. Elk Meadow, at the bottom, has auto, bus and RV parking, flush toilets, drinking water and picnic tables.
Much of the upper trail follows the alignment of the original Bald Hills Road — the route Yurok people and, later, gold seekers used through this country. Lower sections wind through forest that was never disturbed. The California Conservation Corps did much of the construction with federal stimulus funding, and the trail opened October 30, 2010.
Bears and elk both turn up around Elk Meadow. Stay 75 feet back and never approach on foot. Bald Hills Road is being repaved between the grove and the Redwood Creek Overlook, with 20- to 30-minute delays as of August 2026.

Local planning questions
Frequently asked
How long is the Berry Glen Trail?
About 3.5 miles one way, per the current NPS trails page. The 2010 news release announcing the trail's opening called it 3 miles, and NPS hasn't reconciled the two. Either way it's a 1,200-foot climb from Elk Meadow to Lady Bird Johnson Grove, rated moderate to strenuous.
Can you reach Lady Bird Johnson Grove without parking at the grove?
Yes. Berry Glen connects the Elk Meadow Day Use Area to the Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail on foot. That matters in summer, when the grove's small lot is typically full from 11am to 4pm and roadside parking on Bald Hills Road brings a ticket or a tow.
Are dogs allowed on the Berry Glen Trail?
No. Pets are prohibited on all trails in Redwood National and State Parks. Leashed pets, on a six-foot maximum leash, are allowed at campgrounds, picnic areas, roads, parking areas and accessible beaches. Service animals are welcome.
Is there a fee to hike Berry Glen?
No. Redwood National and State Parks charges no entrance fee, and no day-use fee is posted for the Elk Meadow Day Use Area. Day-use fees in the parks apply only at Jedediah Smith, Gold Bluffs Beach/Fern Canyon and Elk Prairie.
Where does the Berry Glen Trail start?
At the Elk Meadow Day Use Area, half a mile in on Davison Road, which leaves Highway 101 three miles north of Orick. Elk Meadow has flush toilets, drinking water and parking that fits RVs and trailers. The upper end comes out at the Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail off Bald Hills Road.
