About Manila Dunes Recreation Area
Over 150 acres of beach, dune, wetland and coastal forest sit west of Peninsula Drive, and you can walk through all four in one short outing. Friends of the Dunes publishes that acreage; Manila Community Services District, which manages the site, doesn't publish one at all.
Start at the Manila Community Center, 1611 Peninsula Drive. That car park is effectively the trailhead, and it's where the ample parking is. Restrooms are on site. The California Coastal Trail inventory logs the location as a Coastal Conservancy access point on Humboldt Section 8, with a path to the beach and fishing access.
Dogs are allowed on a leash or under voice control. Horses are allowed too, but only on designated trails. That combination is unusual in this dune complex, where the federal refuge units nearby exclude dogs and much of the rest is pedestrian-only.
Published detail thins out quickly after that. Manila CSD lists no operating hours, no fee, no trail mileage and no trail map for the dunes, and its own Parks page covers Manila Community Park, with its disc golf and RV spaces, rather than this site. Friends of the Dunes, a restoration partner rather than the manager, is the better-documented source.
The dunes carry the endangered plants that define this coastline: beach layia and Menzies' wallflower, the latter unique to this dune system, throwing dense clusters of bright yellow flowers in winter and early spring. European beachgrass is the invasive that restoration work targets. Western snowy plover nests in the wider complex, with March-to-September restrictions at some sites, though Friends of the Dunes doesn't name Manila among them.
Off-highway vehicles have no place here. The nearest legal riding is at Samoa Dunes, further south on the peninsula.

Local planning questions
Frequently asked
Are dogs allowed at Manila Dunes?
Yes, on a leash or under voice control, per the Friends of the Dunes area guide. It's one of the few dune sites on this stretch where dogs are welcome — the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge dune units nearby prohibit them.
Can you ride horses at Manila Dunes?
Yes, but horse use is limited to designated trails. The California Coastal Trail inventory also lists an equestrian trail at the site. Between horses and dogs, this is among the most permissive of the Humboldt dune sites.
How much does Manila Dunes cost?
Neither Manila CSD nor Friends of the Dunes lists a fee for the recreation area. No entry charge is published, though the district doesn't publish an explicit free-entry statement either.
Where do you park for Manila Dunes?
At the Manila Community Center, 1611 Peninsula Drive, off Highway 255 about 0.6 mile south of the village. Manila CSD describes the parking there as ample, and the California Coastal Trail inventory records it as the access point for the site.
Can you ride ATVs at Manila Dunes?
No. No OHV area or provision is described for Manila Dunes by either Manila CSD or Friends of the Dunes. The nearest legal beach-side riding is at Samoa Dunes Recreation Area, run by BLM further down the peninsula.
