The place
About Sequoia Park Zoo & Redwood Sky Walk
Sequoia Park Zoo opened in 1907 and is billed as the oldest zoo in California. It's small, AZA-accredited, city-run, and sits against a stand of second-growth coast redwood in Sequoia Park — 67 acres donated to Eureka in 1894 by Bartlin and Henrietta Glatt, then the last large stand of redwood inside the city.
The Redwood Sky Walk is why most people come now. It's 1,104 linear feet of aluminum bridges and platforms suspended from the trees, reaching 100 feet above the forest floor, and the operator calls it the longest sky walk in the western United States. There are no stairs, steps or ladders anywhere on it, and it's ADA accessible with one exception: an optional 369-foot Adventure segment, 36 inches wide with open mesh decking, which sways noticeably when people move across it. You can skip that leg entirely and still do the whole walk.
It isn't a separate ticket. Sky Walk access is included with zoo admission.
The thing worth knowing before you buy: Humboldt County residents pay substantially less with proof of residency — $16 general against $27 for visitors, $12 for children against $16. EBT and BIC cardholders pay $4 under the zoo's equitable access programme.
Red pandas, Chilean flamingos, black bears and a walk-through free-flight aviary anchor the animal collection, at 150-plus animals across roughly 50 species.
One scheduling trap: from October through March the zoo is closed on Mondays. In summer it's open daily 10 to 6, with last entry at 5:30.
Sequoia Park itself is free — playgrounds, a garden, a duck pond and redwood trails.
