About Drury-Chaney Loop Trail
California State Parks publishes three different lengths for this loop, and all three are live on its own site right now: 2.4 miles on the Park Adventures page and both recent printed info sheets, 1.7 miles on the hiking page, and 1.67 miles in the accessibility survey. Two of those are the same measurement rounded. The 2.4 figure is roughly 44% longer and appears on the newest paperwork. Duration is given as 1.25 hours next to both numbers, which can't be true of both.
Plan for somewhere between 1.7 and 2.4 miles of flat walking and you'll be fine either way.
It sits at the far north end of Humboldt Redwoods, just off the Avenue of the Giants, on old-growth alluvial bench. State Parks describes the cooler temperatures and heavier fog up here producing a lush carpet of greenery under the redwoods — this end stays green and damp when the rest of the Avenue has dried out.
The accessible rating is about the tread, not the site. Surface is compacted soil, 5 feet wide on average with a 3-foot minimum, grade generally under 5%. But cross slope reaches 13% at several armored creek crossings, which State Parks says may challenge some users, and there is no accessible parking and no restroom at the trailhead.
Dogs are barred from the trail. That catches people out, because it reads exactly like a stroller-and-wheelchair path.
Coming south on 101, take the Avenue of the Giants / Pepperwood exit, number 674. No official source puts this trailhead at Redcrest — Pepperwood is the only town State Parks names for it.
It's one of five trails the park lists as accessible, with Gould Grove, Fleischmann Grove, Founder's Grove and Rockefeller Loop.

Local planning questions
Frequently asked
How long is the Drury-Chaney Loop?
Between 1.7 and 2.4 miles, depending which State Parks page you read. The accessibility survey measured 1.67 miles and is the only source that documents a method; the Park Adventures page and both recent info sheets say 2.4. Either way it's flat and takes about an hour and a quarter.
Is the Drury-Chaney trail wheelchair accessible?
The tread is — compacted soil, 5 feet wide on average, generally under 5% grade. The site isn't fully served, though: there's no accessible parking and no restroom, and several armored creek crossings have cross slopes up to 13%, which State Parks flags as challenging for some users.
Are dogs allowed on the Drury-Chaney Loop?
No. Dogs aren't allowed on any trail in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, and this one is no exception. Elsewhere in the park they must be attended and on a leash no longer than six feet. Service animals are excepted.
Where is the Drury-Chaney trailhead?
At the northern end of Humboldt Redwoods State Park, off the Avenue of the Giants, near the town of Pepperwood. Coming south on Highway 101, take exit 674 for the Avenue of the Giants / Pepperwood. State Parks doesn't publish a milepost, and no official source places the trailhead at Redcrest.
Is there a fee to hike Drury-Chaney?
No. There's no fee for this trail and no parking charge. The park's only day-use fee is $8 per vehicle at Williams Grove Day-Use Area, a different site on the Avenue.
