Sailing 101

Sailing 101 is a two-day, hands-on course designed to teach the fundamentals of small-boat sailing in a supportive, safety-focused environment. Led by Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center's sailing instructors, this course provides the skills and confidence needed to sail a dinghy independently on Humboldt Bay.   Participants will learn essential sailing terminology, how to rig and de-rig a Laser sailboat, launch and recover safely, and handle a sailboat under a variety of mild conditions. Instruction is primarily on the water, with guided practice in steering, tacking, jibing, stopping and starting, docking, capsize recovery, and basic movement around other vessels and docks. Boating safety—including life-jacket use, communication, right-of-way rules, and risk awareness—is integrated throughout the course. Sailing 101 is ideal for those with little or no prior sailing experience, as well as those looking to build a strong foundation before sailing recreationally or advancing to higher-level instruction. Expect teamwork, skill progression, and plenty of time actively sailing on the bay. Schedule Saturday, September 26th, 9AM - 6PM Sunday, September 27th, 9AM-6PM All sailing equipment and safety gear are provided. Successful completion of Sailing 101 enables participants to rent HBAC Laser sailboats for their personal use.
